Pioneering Negative Aeration for Large-Scale Composting

The Tianjin Zhengguizhuang Composting Facility was the first project to combine BDP Industries' agitated composting technology with the BioAer® Floor System with negative aeration.  Designed for fully automated operation, the facility processes municipal biosolids and agricultural byproducts while maintaining exceptional odor control through engineered airflow and enclosed composting.

The Challenge

The City of Tianjin required a high-capacity composting facility capable of processing municipal biosolids at scale while minimizing odors and reducing operator involvement.

The solution needed to integrate automated material handling, enclosed composting bays, and reliable airflow distribution to support continuous operation and consistent composting performance.

The BacTee Solution

The facility utilizes the BioAer® floor system with negative aeration beneath twenty automated composting bays, working in conjunction with BDP agitated bay technology and an enclosed biofilter.

Negative aeration was selected to:

  • Maximize odor containment throughout the facility

  • Deliver uniform airflow through every composting bay

  • Reduce fog and condensation inside the building

  • Support fully automated operation from receiving through discharge

  • Provide reliable performance in a continuous municipal process

Tianjin Zhengguizhuang Composting Facility demonstrated that large-scale municipal composting could successfully combine automation, negative aeration, and uniform airflow distribution into a single integrated process.
