Compact In-Vessel Composting with Automated Aeration

The Los Lunas Transfer Station composting process demonstrates how enclosed composting can be integrated into a municipal transfer station using a compact, modular design. The facility combines BacTee's BioAer® floor system with intelligent airflow controls that continuously balance fresh aeration air and recycled process air to maintain optimal composting conditions while minimizing energy consumption and supporting effective odor control.

The Challenge

The facility required an enclosed composting process that could divert organic waste from landfill while fitting within the village's existing transfer station footprint. Operators also needed precise control of airflow throughout the composting process to maintain consistent biological activity and minimize odors.

The BacTee Solution

Bactee supplied the BioAer® floor system and controls system for all 10 composting boxes and 2 biofilter boxes, creating a fully integrated aeration system for composting through final odor treatment.

​Unlike conventional aeration systems that rely solely on fresh air, the Los Lunas facility recycles warm, moisture-rich process air back into each composting box.  Automated controls adjust the balance between recycled air and fresh aeration air in response to compost temperatures, allowing operators to maintain optimal biological activity while improving energy efficiency and process stability.
