Compo-Haut-Richelieu Food and Green Waste Composting Center

The Compo-Haut-Richelieu Regional Food and Green Waste Composting Center (CHR) is distinguished by the relatively simple compost feedstock preparation process.  The facility, located just southeast of Montreal in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC, uses eight concrete bays.  Each bay is 10ft by 213ft and is served by two 100 horsepower BDP agitators and designed to process 50,000 TPY.  The facility uses organic material, including green waste and food waste, collected from the surrounding municipalities brown bin program (BRUN'O Lebac).  CHR is a joint venture between MRC de haut Richelieu and its 14 municipalities and their private partner, GFL Environmental.

Those familiar with the facility have praised the fully enclosed facility.  Mayor Suzanne Boulais, of Mont-Saint-Gregoire (one of the 14 municipalities) stated their belief that the opening of this facility coupled with citizens' efforts in recycling and recover programs, which has significantly reduced landfill waste, will further spur momentum to end the landfilling of organic materials in Quebec and to increase the reduction of greenhouse gasses in the area.
